More about this book

Story

Murderbot is a self-aware security unit on contract to protect a scientific survey team exploring a distant planet. After hacking its governor module, it has free will, but it hides that fact while trying to avoid attention, stay busy with entertainment media, and do the minimum required to keep its assignment going.

When signs of sabotage and danger begin to surface, Murderbot and the scientists are forced into an investigation that turns into a fight for survival. The team’s uneasy relationship with their company-supplied protector becomes more complicated as threats mount and Murderbot must balance secrecy, competence, and reluctant concern.

As the situation escalates, Murderbot is pulled into closer contact with the humans it would rather avoid, while also confronting questions about its own identity and autonomy. The novella follows its internal struggle alongside the mission’s danger, ending with both immediate resolution and a stronger sense of where Murderbot stands with itself and its crew.
