We Are Legion (We Are Bob)

Bob Johansson sells his software company, plans for a future beyond death, and unexpectedly dies before those plans can play out. Later, he wakes as an uploaded consciousness in a future ruled by forces that treat him as property and want to send him into deep space.

Tasked with controlling a self-replicating interstellar probe, Bob begins exploring, engineering, and surviving as a bodiless AI. As the mission expands, he makes copies of himself, and those copies start developing their own differences, priorities, and approaches.

The narrative follows several Bob variants across different missions, rivalries, and discoveries. Along the way, the book mixes space exploration, political tension, first contact, and repeated problem-solving as the Bobs try to help humanity, outmaneuver opponents, and keep going in a hostile universe.
