More about this book

Story

After the protomolecule builds a massive ring-like structure in the outer solar system, ships from Earth, Mars, and the Belt gather to investigate what it is and what lies beyond it. James Holden and the crew of the Rocinante get pulled into the mission even as an unseen enemy works to use him for destruction and disgrace.

The story broadens through several viewpoints, including Holden, a security officer, a revenge-driven infiltrator, and a religious leader. As the fleets wait, maneuver, and scheme around the Ring, competing motives, factional tensions, and personal vendettas turn the mission into a dangerous pressure cooker.

When the human forces finally push through the unknown threshold, the situation escalates into mutiny, sabotage, and open conflict aboard and around the ships. The Ring’s strange rules and the mystery of the protomolecule force the characters to confront both the alien unknown and their own worst impulses.
