More about this book

Story

Set years before the main series, the book follows a new group of survivors in a world devastated by sun flares. Mark and Trina are trying to keep living after the disaster when a deadly virus begins spreading and turning people violent or irrational.

As the outbreak worsens, Mark, Trina, and allies like Alec and Lana are forced into a constant struggle for food, safety, and answers. Their journey becomes a search for the source of the virus and the people responsible for unleashing it, while the infection and chaos spread around them.

The story also uses dreamlike flashbacks and a prologue/epilogue to connect parts of the prequel to the broader series mythology. A young immune child, Deedee, becomes an important thread in the crisis, while the ending and final revelations point back toward the later Maze Runner storyline.
