More about this book

Story

Klara is an Artificial Friend waiting in a store to be chosen by a child. She watches people closely, learns from what she sees, and hopes for a home where she can be useful and loved. From her limited, observant perspective, the world feels both ordinary and slightly off.

When Klara is selected by Josie, a sickly teenager, she enters a family life shaped by illness, secrecy, and social difference. As Klara settles in, she becomes both companion and witness, trying to understand Josie, Josie’s mother, and the people around them, including a neighboring boy and the pressures that shape their lives.

Klara’s faith in the sun and her careful attention to human behavior drive her toward a plan she believes can help Josie. The story gradually reveals more about the society they live in, including genetic enhancement, privilege, and the costs of trying to secure a better future. The ending remains restrained and emotionally charged rather than fully explanatory.
