Story
Kathy, now an adult, looks back on her childhood at Hailsham, a secluded English boarding school where she grew up with her friends Ruth and Tommy. At first, the school seems sheltered and oddly idyllic, but Kathy’s memories keep circling small events, private rivalries, and the growing sense that something about their lives has always been hidden.
As Kathy revisits Hailsham and later years spent with her friends outside school, the story gradually reveals the purpose the children were raised for and the conditioning that shaped how they understood themselves. Their friendships, romances, and jealousies unfold against a system that has already decided their futures.
The narrative moves through recollection rather than suspense, letting meaning accumulate from fragments, repetitions, and late clarifications. Kathy’s return to memory becomes a way of piecing together love, loss, and the terms of a life that was never fully her own.
