More about this book

Story

Valentine Michael Smith, a human born on Mars and raised by Martians, is brought back to Earth after a long absence. On Earth, he is thrust into a world of government attention, media scrutiny, legal claims, and competing attempts to control his future.

As he learns human language and customs, Smith begins to understand Earth culture through the help of a nurse, a journalist, and an older mentor figure. His Martian perspective, unusual abilities, and ideas about water, trust, and belonging set him apart from the people around him.

The novel increasingly turns from adjustment and intrigue toward philosophy, religion, sexuality, and social change. Smith’s growing influence leads toward a new belief system and a highly controversial challenge to ordinary Earth values.
