More about this book

Story

In an alternate United States, society treats love as a dangerous illness and requires a cure at eighteen. Lena Haloway, living with relatives in Portland, Maine, expects to undergo the procedure and finally enter a safe, predictable life.

As her cure date approaches, Lena meets Alex, a boy from outside the system who changes how she sees the rules she has always trusted. Their connection pulls her toward forbidden feelings, secrecy, and growing doubt about the government’s version of safety.

The novel follows Lena’s shifting loyalties as she begins to question her upbringing, her family’s history, and the logic of the world around her. The story builds toward a major turning point and ends on a cliffhanger that clearly sets up the next installment.
