More about this book
Story
In a future society, all teenagers live as “uglies” until their sixteenth birthday, when surgery transforms them into “pretties” with perfect looks and an easy, party-filled life. Tally is counting down to that change and expects nothing more than joining her friends in the new world.
When she meets Shay, another girl who questions the system and runs away, Tally is forced into a choice between loyalty and the promise of becoming pretty. To get what she wants, she must track Shay to a hidden community outside the city and uncover what the authorities do not want her to know.
As Tally spends time among the fugitives and learns more about the society she grew up in, her certainty begins to crack. The story follows her growing awareness of the costs of conformity, the truth behind the operation, and the consequences of deciding who to trust.
