The Story

Smoke and Iron continues the struggle against the Great Library, a powerful institution that controls what people may read and punishes dissent. After a major setback, Jess Brightwell and his allies are split apart, each forced into a dangerous role that could help topple the Library or get them killed.

Jess takes on a risky identity-based gambit while other members of the group fight from prisons, ships, and rival strongholds. With multiple fronts moving at once, the story follows parallel efforts to secure allies, survive betrayal, and keep a rebellion alive under crushing pressure.

As the Library tightens its grip and the world edges toward open conflict, the group’s separate plans begin converging toward a larger confrontation. The novel builds toward a volatile turning point, with shifting loyalties, intense danger, and a setup for the final struggle still to come.
