First published 2005 · Weather Warden
The Story
Joanne Baldwin is trying to reach Las Vegas after the events of the previous book, where a troubled teenager named Kevin has seized dangerous powers and brought an immensely powerful Djinn under his control. The Wardens are fractured, Djinn are vanishing, and a new faction called the Ma'at enters the picture, claiming to seek balance while pushing Joanne toward a choice that may cost her life.
As Joanne pushes deeper into Vegas, she is repeatedly blocked, manipulated, separated from allies, and forced to operate without full information. Flashbacks to her past become important as the book reveals more about earlier trauma, previous decisions, and hidden connections between Joanne, the Wardens, the Djinn, and the Ma'at.
The story builds through shifting alliances, betrayals, and repeated reversals, with Joanne trying to stop Kevin without fully trusting anyone around her. The conflicts tighten around David, Lewis, Jonathan, and the secret society’s agenda, leading to major changes in Joanne’s situation and setting up the next installment with several unresolved threads.
