The Story

Maylak, the tribe’s healer and a heavily pregnant member of the community, wakes with a troubling sense that something is wrong. She spends the day checking on people across the tribe, reassured that everyone seems physically well even though her unease does not go away.

As she moves through the caverns and visits familiar couples and family groups, the story revisits the broader community and Maylak’s role within it. Her perspective highlights her constant caretaking, her bond with her mate Kashrem, and her sense of responsibility for everyone’s wellbeing.

The second short story shifts to a move into the new girls’ cave, with Farli helping Maddie settle in while dodging suitors. Together, the two pieces function as a brief interlude between larger installments, offering small character moments while hinting that something important is approaching.
