More about this book

Story

On his 75th birthday, John Perry visits his wife’s grave and enlists in the Colonial Defense Force, the military that defends humanity’s off-world colonies. The recruitment offer is simple and unsettling: old age for a new body, then years of service in a distant war against hostile alien powers.

After leaving Earth behind, Perry is transformed and enters training with other senior recruits. The early parts focus on acclimation, camaraderie, humor, and the strange mechanics of becoming a soldier again, while the larger political and scientific realities of the future slowly come into view.

Once deployed, Perry is drawn into brutal interstellar fighting where survival, loyalty, and the meaning of being human become increasingly central. The story mixes battlefield action with questions about duty, colonization, identity, and what is gained or lost when a life is remade.
