The Change

Tobias, stuck in red-tailed hawk form, tries to stay useful by scouting enemy activity and finding Yeerk pool entrances. While flying with Rachel, he’s drawn off course into a rescue situation involving two escaped Hork-Bajir fleeing Controllers. The Animorphs are pulled into helping them survive.

The rescue becomes an action-heavy chase through the woods, but it also opens a larger question: who is guiding Tobias, and why? Tobias keeps sensing he’s being steered toward specific places, and the strange interference leads to contact with the Ellimist. Tobias resents being used, but he is also desperate for a way to keep fighting.

In exchange for helping the Hork-Bajir reach safety, Tobias is granted a change that gives him back the ability to morph, though not in the simple way he hoped. The book closes with a major personal and series-altering turn for him, including a time-traveling step that lets him reclaim access to his human body for limited periods while leaving his hawk identity intact.
