More about this book

Story

After a second civil war over reproductive rights, a harsh compromise reshapes society: children are protected until age thirteen, then may be “unwound” and used for body parts. Connor, Risa, and Lev each end up marked for unwinding for different reasons and are forced into flight.

As they run, they encounter a system built on euphemism, fear, and institutionalized cruelty, while trying to survive until they are old enough to be safe. Their separate paths, beliefs, and loyalties pull them toward hard choices about obedience, escape, and what it means to remain human.

The story follows their attempts to evade capture and navigate a world where adults, authorities, and even family can treat children as disposable. Along the way, the book builds tension through converging viewpoints, dangerous encounters, and recurring moral questions about life, identity, and responsibility.
