After the events of the first book, Amaranthe Lokdon and her crew are still being hunted and blamed for a plot they helped stop. They want to prove they are on the emperor’s side, but every good deed seems to make their situation worse.

When mutilated bodies appear in the city aqueducts and a mysterious illness starts incapacitating citizens, the team investigates the source of the trouble. The search pushes them beyond the city into harsher territory, where they face hostile forces, dangerous creatures, and mechanical threats while trying to uncover who is behind the poisoning.

This installment gives more attention to Books alongside Amaranthe, showing more of how the group works and how each member fits into it. As the mystery unfolds, the crew keeps balancing danger, banter, and growing bonds while still hoping to clear their names and earn the emperor’s favor.
