More about this book

Story

Bean survives childhood on the streets through intelligence, caution, and a talent for reading danger before it reaches him. His life changes when he is noticed by adults looking for exceptional children and drawn toward Battle School.

At Battle School, Bean moves through intense training, rivalry, and political maneuvering while watching the larger conflict with an analytical eye. The story follows his rise alongside and in relation to another gifted student, Ender, as the war effort and school dynamics tighten around them.

The novel alternates between Bean's development and the larger machinery surrounding him, gradually filling in the hidden background behind familiar events. It builds toward the role Bean plays in the wider struggle against the alien enemy while setting up later stories in the series.
