More about this book
Story
Tom Hazard appears to be a middle-aged history teacher in London, but he has a rare condition that makes him age extremely slowly and forces him to hide in plain sight. To stay safe, he keeps changing identities and moves from place to place under the protection of a secretive society of people like him.
As Tom settles into a new life, the story moves between his present-day work and memories from earlier centuries. Those recollections include famous people, historical eras, lost loves, family loss, and the pressure of never being able to live openly as himself.
A new connection in the present threatens the rule that has governed Tom’s life for years: never fall in love. As the society’s control, Tom’s grief, and his search for a missing daughter collide, he must decide whether to keep hiding or finally choose to live in the present.
