More about this book

Story

A strange global phenomenon begins spreading: people who see something unseen become violently insane and often kill themselves or others. As society collapses, survivors cover windows, wear blindfolds outside, and retreat into houses, trying to stay alive without knowing what the danger is.

Malorie is pregnant when the crisis begins and eventually ends up among a small group of survivors in a boarded-up house. The story moves between that earlier time and the later period when she has spent years training her children to survive in darkness, relying on sound and strict routines.

When it becomes time to leave their refuge, Malorie and her two young children take a dangerous blindfolded river journey toward a hoped-for safe place. The trip forces them to navigate fear, uncertain companionship, and an unseen presence that may be following them.
