More about this book
Story
Malcolm Polstead, an unnoticed but observant boy living above his parents’ inn near Oxford, hears gossip, secrets, and hints of danger from the adults around him. A mysterious message, a child at a priory, and mounting interest from powerful factions draw him into a covert struggle over Lyra, a baby whose safety seems to matter to everyone.
As Malcolm learns more about Dust, the Magisterium, and the people shadowing the child, the story gradually shifts from quiet surveillance and rumor to overt threat. He forges alliances, especially with Alice, while trying to understand who can be trusted and why Lyra is being hunted.
When a catastrophic flood transforms the landscape, Malcolm and his companions are forced into a perilous journey by boat and canoe. The second half becomes a survival-and-rescue narrative as they try to keep Lyra safe while pursued through an altered, dangerous world.
