More about this book

Story

Lauren Olamina grows up in a walled community on the outskirts of Los Angeles as society around her unravels. Scarcity, violence, fire, and lawlessness press in from outside while she hides a condition that makes her feel other people’s pain and pleasure.

When her home is destroyed, Lauren is forced onto the road with other survivors. The journey becomes a test of endurance, trust, and leadership as she tries to protect herself and the people who join her.

As she moves north, Lauren develops and records a new belief system centered on change and survival. The story follows both the physical journey and the emergence of a new community and philosophy in a broken world.
