More about this book
Story
A novel-length satire centered on Kilgore Trout, a struggling science-fiction writer, and Dwayne Hoover, a successful Midwest car dealer whose mind is slipping. Their paths move toward a collision after one of Trout’s stories is taken as truth.
Along the way, the narrative digresses through observations, jokes, drawings, and commentary on America, art, sex, race, politics, pollution, and human behavior. The authorial voice repeatedly reminds the reader that the book is self-aware and that fiction, ideas, and reality are constantly interacting.
The story builds toward an ending that is signposted early, but the book is less about suspense than about the satirical journey itself. It uses its characters, interruptions, and metafictional turns to explore how people think, believe, and harm one another in a world shaped by bad ideas and broken systems.
