More about this book

Story

Area X is an isolated, sealed-off region that has been cut off from the rest of the world for decades and is the subject of repeated scientific expeditions. The twelfth expedition consists of four women identified only by their professions: biologist, anthropologist, surveyor, and psychologist. Their mission is to map the territory, observe carefully, and avoid contamination, but previous expeditions have ended in suicide, violence, cancer, or profound change.

The story is told by the biologist in a close first-person journal-like account, with flashbacks to her life before Area X and to the husband who participated in an earlier expedition. As the team moves deeper into the territory, they encounter strange terrain, unsettling structures, and signs that the environment itself may be active, alive, or impossible to fully understand. Trust within the group erodes as secrets, hypnosis, and differing interpretations of reality complicate the mission.

The narrative steadily intensifies while withholding clear explanations about Area X, the earlier expeditions, and even what can be fully trusted in the biologist’s account. The book moves through eerie discoveries and psychological strain toward an ending that leaves major questions open. The emphasis remains on atmosphere, uncertainty, and the biologist’s changing perception of both the place and herself.
