Story
Jake Epping, a high school English teacher in Maine, learns that a diner’s back room opens into 1958. His friend Al, who has been using the portal, asks Jake to take over a long-running mission: live in the past and try to stop the assassination of John F. Kennedy.
To do that, Jake must build a new life in the past and wait for the right moment, all while dealing with the rules and risks of changing history. Along the way, he investigates people and events, navigates everyday life in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and repeatedly confronts the idea that the past may resist being altered.
As the mission deepens, Jake becomes emotionally attached to the world he is living in, especially to a local community and a romance that complicates his plans. The story keeps building toward the assassination date while exploring what it would cost to rewrite history and whether any change can ever stay simple.
