More about this book
Story
A covert U.S. government project to harness a dangerous virus goes catastrophically wrong, unleashing infected, vampire-like beings and triggering collapse. In the opening phase, the story follows several key people drawn into the disaster, including an FBI agent ordered to deliver prisoners for experimentation and a young girl whose fate becomes central to what comes next.
After the initial catastrophe, the narrative jumps far forward into a world remade by the outbreak. Survivors live in guarded communities, rely on fragile systems, and face constant threat from the infected outside their walls. The book follows a broad cast as they try to endure, adapt, and understand what the disaster has made of the world.
As the story expands across time and shifting viewpoints, earlier events, later consequences, and scattered clues connect into a larger arc about survival, responsibility, and the future. The book emphasizes travel, struggle, and repeated revelations while moving toward a larger confrontation and a series-spanning continuation.
