The Story
In a near-future world reshaped by climate change and advanced technology, Audrey lives with the values her parents taught her: books, music, philosophy, and skepticism about Echos, humanlike machines built to serve people. When her life is shattered and she is forced into her uncle’s orbit, she finds herself surrounded by the very technology she fears.
At her uncle’s home, Audrey meets Daniel, an Echo who does not behave like the others. He feels things he should not, and he seems determined to help her make sense of the danger closing in around her. As Audrey investigates what happened to her family, she is pushed into a larger conflict over technology, control, and what counts as human.
The story moves through alternating perspectives and a mystery-driven chase toward answers, while the relationship between Audrey and Daniel becomes increasingly central. Their connection, and the question of whether machines can think, feel, or deserve rights, drives the narrative toward a tense conclusion with unresolved implications.
