The Story
In the city-state of Town, citizenship, work, and security are divided by status and utility. The lowest-status residents live in Saha Estates, a decaying housing complex on the margins, where people survive through precarious labor, mutual aid, and endurance.
The story opens around a death and a disappearance, with one sibling becoming implicated and another trying to understand what happened. From there, the narrative moves away from a single mystery and into the lives of many Saha residents, using their backstories and present-day struggles to reveal how the society works.
As the book shifts across timelines and perspectives, it gradually exposes the structure of Town and the costs of its hierarchy. The residents’ separate lives connect through shared conditions, private histories, and institutional violence, building toward an unsettled, open-ended confrontation with the system that shapes them.
