More about this book

Story

August moves to New York City hoping to prove that love, magic, and optimism are illusions. She takes a job at a 24-hour diner, lands among an eccentric group of roommates, and settles into a lonely routine built around work, school, and subway commutes.

On the Q train, August keeps crossing paths with Jane, a magnetic and mysterious girl who seems out of step with everyone else. Their connection grows into something romantic, but August soon learns that Jane is not just strange—she is displaced in time and cannot leave the subway.

As August tries to understand Jane’s situation and help her, the story opens into a larger web of queer history, family baggage, friendship, and memory. The romance deepens alongside a mystery about Jane’s past and August’s own unfinished emotional life, pushing August toward a future she never expected to want.
