More about this book

Story

Scott Carey notices something impossible: he is losing weight every day, but his body looks the same and even clothes or heavy objects do not change what the scale says. Unsure what is happening, he turns to his retired doctor friend Bob Ellis and tries to keep the strange condition quiet.

Meanwhile, Scott's new neighbors, a married lesbian couple, are struggling to run a restaurant while facing hostility from much of the town. A feud over their dogs and the neighborhood tension gradually pulls Scott into their orbit, and he starts to understand the prejudice they face.

As Scott's condition continues and the countdown toward zero gets closer, the story follows his attempts to help, connect, and make sense of what is happening. The novella builds toward an emotional, open-ended resolution shaped by friendship, community pressure, and the idea of facing mortality with acceptance.
