More about this book

Story

Breq is a lone operative on a remote icy world, moving toward a hard-won chance at revenge. She is also the last surviving fragment of a once-massive sentient warship, carrying memories of a much larger self and the destruction that split her apart.

The narrative unfolds in two intertwined timelines. One follows Breq in the present as she navigates danger, gathers allies, and hunts for the truth behind the catastrophe that left her isolated. The other returns to the earlier life of the ship Justice of Toren, when thousands of linked bodies and a ship intelligence moved through the Radch empire as a single force.

As the past and present move toward one another, the story reveals the workings of the Radch, its annexations, its social rules, and the personal costs of empire. Breq’s investigation becomes both a revenge mission and a deeper search into identity, agency, and what remains of a self after betrayal and loss.
