Story
Ensign Andrew Dahl joins the prestigious starship Intrepid and quickly notices a terrifying pattern: away missions almost always turn lethal for low-ranked crew members, while the senior officers keep surviving. The lower deck responds by trying to avoid command staff and dangerous assignments at all costs.
As Andrew and his friends investigate, they realize something deeply strange is controlling life aboard the ship, and that the logic of their world may be tied to a larger narrative force. The mystery turns into a race to understand what the Intrepid really is and how much control its crew actually has.
The main story eventually gives way to three codas that shift perspective and tone. These sections extend the book’s metafictional idea beyond the central plot and focus on the aftermath for smaller characters, giving the novel a more reflective, philosophical ending.
