Penguin Highway

A fourth-grade boy who loves taking notes, running experiments, and studying the world around him lives in a Japanese town during summer vacation. He is confident in his own intelligence and spends much of his time observing school life, his family, his friends, and the dentist’s office he visits regularly.

When penguins begin appearing in town, he treats the event like a research problem and starts investigating with his friends. As the mystery grows, the children uncover more strange phenomena tied to the woman at the dentist’s office and to a larger pattern of reality-bending events.

The story follows their attempts to understand what is happening through observation, hypotheses, and testing. Along the way, the book mixes everyday childhood life with surreal, science-fiction, and fantasy elements, moving toward an ending that resolves the central mystery while leaving the wider meaning open to interpretation.
