A dead academic seems to return in a new body, pulling a psychiatrist and a conspiracy into questions of identity and immortality.

The Story
Nicholas Slopen, a scholar of Samuel Johnson, is confronted with an impossible claim: a man who appears to be dead insists he is Nicholas. The resulting mystery unfolds through testimony, psychiatric material, and a search for the truth behind forged letters and a strange procedure.
As the story expands, Nicholas becomes caught in a dangerous conspiracy involving consciousness, language, and the possibility of transferring identity into another body. His experiences in a psychiatric hospital and his struggle to prove who he is drive the narrative forward.
The book gradually reveals more of its speculative mechanism while keeping key details withheld for much of the novel. It moves between literary mystery, psychological pressure, and thriller momentum before ending in a more contemplative, unresolved way for some readers.
