The Leftovers
After a mass disappearance upends a suburban town, the survivors struggle with grief, cults, and unfinished lives.

The Story
Three years after the Sudden Departure, a large and unexplained disappearance has left the town of Mapleton and the Garvey family trying to live with absence. Kevin, the local mayor, wants to restore normal life while his marriage, parenting, and community ties strain under the loss. His wife, son, and daughter each respond differently to the event, while Nora Durst and others in town are also trying to survive the emotional wreckage.
As people search for meaning, new groups and behaviors appear: silent cults, healing movements, withdrawal, rebellion, and attempts to rebuild ordinary routines. The book follows multiple characters as they cope with grief, confusion, loneliness, faith, and the pressure to keep going without ever getting an explanation for what happened.
The narrative stays close to the personal aftermath rather than the mystery itself. It moves through intersecting domestic and community storylines, showing how the survivors’ choices reshape their families and relationships. The result is a largely unresolved portrait of life after a world-changing loss.
