More about this book

The Story

Wesley Smith, an English instructor and devoted reader, is reeling from a breakup when he buys a Kindle out of spite and curiosity. The device arrives with odd differences from the usual model, including a pink case and a hidden set of experimental features.

As Wesley explores the Kindle, he discovers books, newspapers, and other content from alternate realities where famous writers lived different lives and wrote different works. What begins as a literary curiosity quickly becomes an obsession, drawing in a colleague and a student as he tries to understand what the device is showing him.

The Kindle’s abilities expand beyond lost books into glimpses of the future, and Wesley learns of a coming event with personal consequences. His attempt to respond to that knowledge pulls him deeper into the device’s rules, its paradoxes, and the larger forces tied to the worlds it reveals.
