The Story
Set in a near-future Netherlands that closely resembles the real one, the story follows Hava, a young woman living with a mysterious illness called colorlessness. The disease makes patients dependent on expensive medication and places growing pressure on the economy, politics, and public debate.
As Hava travels toward a decisive act, the narrative moves back and forth between the present and her memories. Those memories show her family conflict, her mother’s public activism, her friendships with politically driven peers, and her gradual exposure to radical ideas about colorless people and society’s future.
The book builds toward a political and personal turning point as Hava becomes increasingly radicalized and tries to make a statement about the future of the colorless and the society that supports them. The story is intercut with brochures, radio/news material, and other public-facing texts, and it ends with a twist-heavy, often described as abrupt, conclusion.
