In a technologically advanced parallel-world clan, a deadly pandemic forces an evacuation and leaves a young boy separated from his parents. During the crisis he rescues a white cat, and the cat helps keep him alive as he struggles through the worst of the outbreak.

After surviving the initial disaster, the boy and the cat continue together across a wider landscape of clans, walls, vehicles, settlements, forests, and other unfamiliar places. Along the way they meet new companions, confront power structures, and discover that the boy has a special ability connected to animals.
