More about this book

The Story

Lail, a young woman in the future, sits in a therapy center and asks to have her painful memories erased. The memory she wants gone is tied to a life-changing disaster, the people she lost, and the years that followed. From there, the story moves back to the events that shaped her life.

As a girl, Lail survives a devastating natural catastrophe with help from Esok, a brilliant boy who becomes important to her life. She later lives among other survivors, builds a friendship with Maryam, and becomes involved in relief and volunteer work. The story follows their bonds as the world around them changes under pressure from environmental disaster and advancing technology.

Over time, Lail’s feelings for Esok become more complicated, and the question of what should be remembered or released grows central. The narrative alternates between past and present, gradually revealing why Lail wants to forget and what it would mean to accept her losses instead. The book ends by bringing those emotional and memory questions to a head.
