The Touch
A family doctor gains a healing touch that saves lives by day and steadily destroys his own life.
First published 1986 · Adversary Cycle
The Story
Dr. Alan Bulmer, a dedicated family physician, acquires the ability to cure illness through touch. What begins as a miraculous secret quickly becomes a burden as patients, colleagues, and powerful outsiders sense something unusual in him.
As Alan tries to use the gift responsibly and keep it hidden, the demands on him grow. His marriage, practice, reputation, and personal stability come under pressure, while the healing power itself appears to carry a mounting cost.
The story follows Alan’s struggle with the moral and physical consequences of the touch, alongside the people drawn into his life by it. An included prequel short story gives background on the power’s earlier history before it reached the United States.
