Robert Neville lives alone in a world transformed by plague into a nocturnal vampire nightmare. By day he hunts, studies, and tries to understand what happened; by night he barricades himself inside while the infected gather outside.

As Neville endures the routine of survival, the story follows his grief, isolation, drinking, and increasingly desperate search for a scientific explanation and a possible cure. Flashbacks and investigation gradually fill in the losses that brought him here and the fear that he may truly be the last human left.
