The Book of Jhereg

The volume collects three linked fantasy adventures centered on Vlad Taltos, a human assassin and minor crime boss navigating a stratified magical empire. Across the first story, he takes on a perilous assignment that pulls him into layered intrigue, complex factions, and a world of sorcery, telepathy, and revivification.

The second story moves backward in time to show earlier criminal entanglements and the beginning of key relationships, deepening the surrounding politics and underworld power struggles. It expands the social web around Vlad while keeping the focus on plans, rivalries, and the practical mechanics of survival in his world.

The third story shifts into a more introspective register, turning toward class conflict, revolutionary politics, and the strain on Vlad's marriage. It asks harder questions about his role in the system, forcing him to confront the costs of his work, his loyalties, and the society that shaped him.
