The Story

Two months after the previous book, Opal is hiding with her weakened dragon father while she continues learning new magic and trying to keep him alive. Their uneasy dependence forces them into close quarters, turning a long-running family conflict into a test of trust, control, and survival.

At the same time, Nik has gotten himself trapped in dangerous obligations tied to a deadly arena and a powerful spirit threat. As Opal is pulled back into the DFZ’s conflicts, the city itself becomes part of the struggle, with multiple powers competing to shape what the city is and who gets to survive in it.

The story brings Opal, her father, Nik, the DFZ, and other forces into one final conflict where old grievances, new powers, and hidden truths all collide. As the danger escalates, Opal has to act as caretaker, fighter, and mediator, while the series’ central relationships move toward resolution.
