The Story
Lady Mae lives in Settlement Five, where punishment is carried out through “atonements” that remove fingers, hands, feet, and other body parts. Her family holds the role of the Butcher, and when her mother refuses to carry out an atrocity, the town’s leaders kill her and force Lady Mae into the job.
As Lady Mae grows into her role, she lives under a harsh regime of fear, hierarchy, and public violence, while wrestling with her place in a community that hates and relies on her. The return of a childhood friend and the appearance of the Deputy who murdered her mother push her toward choices about loyalty, survival, forgiveness, and revenge.
The story follows her internal conflict as the settlement’s brutal order begins to fray. The plot moves toward a confrontation that forces Lady Mae to decide whether to keep obeying, flee into the mountains, or seek justice on her own terms.
