The Story
Countdown follows the chain of events that turns two promising medical breakthroughs into a catastrophic infection crisis. Set in 2014, it shows scientists, doctors, reporters, activists, patients, and ordinary people crossing paths as the cures for cancer and the common cold move from laboratory success to global disaster.
The narrative unfolds in fragments across multiple viewpoints and brief scenes, gradually revealing how decisions, misinformation, and human error accelerate the spread of the virus. Instead of focusing on a single protagonist, it builds the outbreak through connected moments and documents that show the rising panic from many angles.
As the crisis deepens, the story moves toward the first unmistakable signs of the Rising and the transformation of the world into the one seen in the later Newsflesh books. The ending emphasizes inevitability and aftermath, with the emotional weight coming from seeing how many people are caught inside events already headed toward disaster.
