Messenger of Fear

Mara wakes in a strange misty limbo with no memory except her name, then meets the Messenger of Fear, a solemn young man in black who seems tied to the dead and the damned. He tells her she is now his apprentice and draws her into his strange work.

As Mara follows him, she witnesses separate stories of people who have done terrible things and are forced into a game: win, and they walk away; lose, and they face their greatest fear. Each encounter reveals more about Messenger's rules, his powers, and the harsh logic of his version of justice.

Mara remains at the center of the mystery as fragments of her own past return. The book slowly connects her to the cases she has watched, leading to a final reveal about who she is and why she is there, while also opening the door for the larger series story.
