A young man discovers he is one of the immortal demi-humans and is forced into hiding as governments and special forces begin hunting him. His existence draws him into a widening conflict involving secret experiments, military pressure, and other demi-humans trying to survive or be used.

As the struggle escalates, he forms uneasy alliances and faces a terrorist demi-human whose plans grow ever more destructive. The story becomes a rapid series of tactical battles, chases, and counterplans, with the two sides constantly trying to outmaneuver one another.

The final volume builds toward the last confrontation between the two central opponents, then moves into an epilogue that shows what becomes of the other characters after the conflict ends. The ending emphasizes closure for many threads while leaving some elements and futures open to interpretation.
