More about this book

The Story

Gus is held captive with other hybrid children in a harsh compound where humans are trying to uncover the truth behind the plague and the children’s unusual origins. As Gus is studied, questioned, and drawn into new layers of mystery, the book deepens the sense that his past is tied to something larger than anyone understood.

At the same time, the story follows Jeppard, whose actions in the first volume are recontextualized through his backstory. Flashbacks trace how his life, grief, and choices led him to become the man Gus met, revealing the motives behind his betrayal and the emotional weight he carries.

The two threads move in parallel, building a darker picture of the world, the plague, and the people trying to survive it. By the end, the book leaves major questions unresolved while widening the scope of the series and pushing both Gus and Jeppard toward further revelations.
