Reader Review Summary

Here is my review of the book "Match Game" by Craig Alanson:

Match Game is the 14th installment in Craig Alanson's wildly popular Expeditionary Force series, and it continues to deliver the perfect blend of action, humor, and creative sci-fi storytelling that has made this series such a hit.

What really stands out is Alanson's ability to keep things feeling fresh and engaging even 14 books in. The core characters of Joe Bishop, Skippy the Magnificent, and the Merry Band of Pirates remain as entertaining and lovable as ever. Their hilarious banter and witty rapport provide a constant source of laughs and help balance out the intense action sequences. The friendship between Joe and Skippy in particular has become the heart of the series.

The plot is classic Expeditionary Force - humanity underestimated and in way over their heads against vastly superior alien forces, bluffing and scheming their way out of one impossible situation after another. This time, the rumor of another ancient AI like Skippy being awoken raises the stakes incredibly high as all the major alien races scramble to try to gain control of it. This kicks the story into high gear with double-crosses, triple-crosses, and seat-of-your-pants craziness galore. Alanson juggles the complicated plot deftly, keeping you guessing at every turn.

The signature humor and snark are ever-present, providing a steady stream of laughs amidst the high-octane action. Skippy's hilarious lack of human social skills combined with Joe's exasperated responses never get old. The digs at military bureaucracy and human fallibility also provide plenty of chuckles. At the same time, Alanson doesn't let the silliness undercut the serious drama - there are some genuinely tense, edge-of-your-seat moments scattered throughout.

Perhaps most impressively, Alanson maintains an extremely high level of continuity and consistency across all 14 books. The complex sci-fi concepts, lengthy cast of characters, and myriad plot threads all weave together remarkably cohesively. You can tell there's a ton of behind-the-scenes planning and work to make this expansive universe feel so seamless and believable.

For fans of the series, Match Game delivers everything you've come to expect and love - crazy intergalactic shenanigans, laugh-out-loud humor, seat-of-your-pants thrills, and a solid forward progression of the overarching storyline. The stakes have been raised to dizzying heights for what promises to be an epic conclusion. Newcomers may feel a bit lost amidst the galaxy-spanning narrative, but they'll also likely get sucked into the pure fun and entertainment value of Alanson's work. Highly recommended for fans of entertaining, unabashedly silly-at-times sci-fi adventures. The wait for book 15 is going to be agonizing!
