Bone Silence

by ALASTAIR REYNOLDS

Two sisters, hunted for crimes they didn't commit, navigate a universe filled with ancient mysteries, space battles, and revelations that could change the fate of civilizations. As they struggle to survive and uncover the truth, they must rely on their piratical skills and a crew like no other in a thrilling conclusion to the Revenger Trilogy.

Bone Silence is an ambitious and exhilarating conclusion to Reynolds' inventive space pirate saga that began with Revenger and Shadow Captain. The Ness sisters, Arafura and Adrana, return for one more thrilling, danger-filled adventure filled with piracy, intrigue, strange alien artifacts, and galaxy-spanning mysteries.

Reynolds expands the scope in this final installment, digging deeper into the overarching enigmas that have tantalized readers since the beginning - the cyclical rise and fall of civilizations known as the Occupations, the purpose and origin of the skull-like alien Bones used for instantaneous communication, and the true nature of the universe-wide currency called quoins. While not every question gets a clear answer, there are plenty of shocking revelations and satisfying payoffs for those who have stuck with the Ness sisters through their trials and tribulations.

The world-building remains a highlight, with Reynolds' boundless imagination on full display. He offers up a galaxy teeming with remnants of long-dead alien races, ancient ruins and booby-trapped caches hiding powerful artifacts, and worlds where Gothic sensibilities blend with futuristic technologies in delightful and surprising ways. His vision of a society regressed to almost Victorian-era aesthetics and elements, yet still retaining space travel via solar sails and alien biotech, provides an irresistible hook.

As before, it's the Ness sisters themselves who provide the emotional core of the story. Having grown from inexperienced but determined novices into full-fledged space pirate captains, Arafura and Adrana remain compelling protagonists even if they aren't always the most likable. In Bone Silence, wanted for crimes they didn't commit and pursued by an implacable enemy, they are tested like never before. Their complex sibling relationship continues to evolve in interesting ways.

In terms of pacing and plot, Bone Silence delivers the same page-turning mix of solar system spanning chases, tense space battles, and esoteric mysteries that made the first two books so engrossing. The stakes feel appropriately raised for a finale. If the story occasionally seems to get bogged down in the intricate (and sometimes perplexing) details of the world's economic and historical underpinnings, Reynolds always manages to pull things back around to a satisfying, if not entirely conclusive, endpoint.

With Bone Silence, Reynolds has crafted a fitting capstone to the Revenger trilogy that should largely satisfy series fans. While not every dangling plot thread gets tied off, the Ness sisters' story reaches an appropriate resting place. The rich, evocative world and core mysteries provide plenty of fodder for further stories if Reynolds chooses to return. But if not, Bone Silence provides a worthy send-off for Arafura, Adrana and their colorful crew of misfits.

Newcomers should start with book one, but for those already on board, Bone Silence delivers rousing space operatics with an imaginative flair, all while delving into the fascinatingly strange far-future cosmos that Reynolds has birthed. It solidifies the Revenger trilogy as a must-read for space opera and science fiction fans who like their adventures laced with Gothic grandeur and mind-bending mysteries. While not perfect, it's a more than satisfactory finale that reminds us why Reynolds remains one of the most compelling and creative voices in modern sci-fi.
