The Quantum Garden

by DEREK KÜNSKEN

A con man must travel back in time to save his people from destruction, navigating quantum magic, time travel, and a relentless pursuer. The story delves into political intrigue, moral dilemmas, and the consequences of altering the past in a complex and imaginative sci-fi universe.

Drawing upon the compelling world building, imaginative science, and intricate plotting of his debut novel The Quantum Magician, Derek Künsken returns with a thrilling, mind-bending sequel in The Quantum Garden. This intelligent space opera expands upon the complex universe and fascinating characters introduced in the first book while weaving an even more suspenseful and emotionally impactful time travel adventure.

The story picks up not long after the audacious con pulled off by the crafty homo quantus Belisarius Arjona. Flush with his ill-gotten rewards but reeling from the swift, brutal retaliation enacted on his people as a result, Bel must make a new deal with his erstwhile targets. With the time gates in his possession, he seeks to use his quantum abilities and knack for deceit to track down the source of dangerous wormholes in the past in order to preserve the future of the homo quantus. Joining him on this high-stakes mission through time is an intriguing cast of allies old and new, including his love Cassandra, the amusingly crass pilot Stills, and the conflicted Union strategist Colonel Ayen Iekanjika. But with the relentless, eerie Scarecrow in pursuit, Bel must stay one step ahead if he hopes to succeed - and survive.

One of the great joys of The Quantum Garden is how vividly and creatively it blends cutting-edge science and far-future speculation. Künsken takes concepts from quantum physics and runs with them, imagining a richly detailed universe of engineered post-human subspecies, uplifted alien intelligences, and advanced technology that borders on magic. The world building is dense and heady, with no shortage of delightfully crunchy nuggets for hard sci-fi fans to chew on. At the same time, the story remains grounded in the personal struggles, shifting allegiances and difficult dilemmas faced by its characters. Watching Bel grow to care for the mysterious and endangered Hortus quantus, Ayen wrestle with the sins of her people's past, and the love between Bel and Cassandra deepen through extraordinary circumstances, the novel earns its emotional resonance.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Quantum Evolution book without some mind-bending plot twists courtesy of its wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey conceit. Künsken displays a keen understanding of time travel tropes and pitfalls, constructing a clever, internally consistent take that keeps the reader engaged and guessing. The pacing ramps up steadily, building to a crescendo of smart and thrilling temporal shenanigans that somehow manages to be even more audacious and satisfying than Bel's big con in the first book.

Packed to the brim with big ideas and even bigger personalities, The Quantum Garden is sure to dazzle fans of intelligent, inventive science fiction. Those who haven't yet read The Quantum Magician are advised to start there, as the narrative assumes familiarity with prior events. But the payoff is well worth it, as Künsken has crafted a universe rich with storytelling potential. If this strong sophomore outing is any indication, the Quantum Evolution series is well on its way to being a landmark of 21st century sci-fi.
